Collaborative writing tasks, the unsung hero of the ELA classroom. Not only does it offer several benefits that contribute to their academic, social, and cognitive development, but also is a writing life-saver and can be used in ALL GRADES! So many students get writing paralysis- they stare at a page and don’t get much farther than the staring. Collaborative writing saves them by adding peer support as well as making the writing bite-size and digestible.

Benefits of Collaborative Writing Tasks

Enhanced Learning Experience:

  • Diverse Perspectives: Collaboration brings together students with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. This diversity enriches the content with a variety of ideas and insights.
  • Shared Knowledge: Collaborative writing allows students to pool their knowledge and skills, creating a more comprehensive and well-rounded final product.

Development of Communication Skills:

  • Teamwork: Students learn how to effectively communicate and work in a team. This includes negotiating ideas, resolving conflicts, and dividing tasks.
  • Feedback and Revision: Providing and receiving feedback becomes a crucial part of the collaborative writing process. Students learn to give constructive criticism and incorporate suggestions.

The most challenging part of this activity was mostly just thinking of a way to combine our thesis into one. This was hard because we all really had good ideas and we didn’t know which one to choose. By the end we decided and because we worked together our thesis turned out solid.

I learned a better way to help me brainstorm for a rhetorical essay or any other type of writing style. I really liked this style of writing and working with people because I feel like it is a better way to learn than doing it independently.

Preparation for Professional Environments:

  • Real-world Skills: Collaborative writing mirrors professional environments where individuals need to work together to achieve common goals. Students gain experience in teamwork, a valuable skill in the workplace.

Increased Motivation and Engagement:

  • Peer Support: Working with peers can provide emotional support and motivation. Students may be more engaged and motivated to contribute when they know their efforts are part of a collective goal. I’ve seen this multiple times. Knowing their peers are relying on them to have a complete piece motivates them to contribute and ask questions of their peers if needed.
  • Sense of Ownership: Collaborative projects often result in a sense of ownership and pride in the final product, boosting motivation.

We could all improve our communication as a group because sometimes I think we made it more complicated than we needed to. I feel like we worked well together but need to make a plan to communicate better.
